Although many individuals may not be aware of this, Great Wall Motors is a formidable Chinese automobile manufacturer that is specifically involved in the mass production of sport utility vehicles. The company was first established in 1978 as a producer of commercial lorries and as Great Wall lacked the proper licensing, it was unable to manufacture its first line of cars until 2008.
Still, Great Wall has enjoyed a good deal of limelight in recent years. An example of this can be seen when the company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2003 (the first Chinese automobile manufacturer to do so). Also, Great Wall has fared the recent economic downturn quite well as is evidenced by it having recently become the ninth-largest Chinese vehicle producer in the country.
One of the main focuses of its current production is in the realm of modern sport utility vehicles, as mentioned earlier. In fact, Great wall has proven itself to be one of the most popular brands within China and the company has also enjoyed substantial exports into the Russian marketplace during the past decade. However, these exports still represent a rather small portion of the total number of vehicles produced and notwithstanding exports to Russia, Great Wall vehicles have entered into relatively few foreign markets.
Due to the increased economic presence of China in the global economy, many feel that Great Wall will be exported in greater numbers in the coming years. While it still may be some time before these models find their way into the western markets, it is thought that Great Wall may very well be a formidable company as it continues to expand its operations.
